A 5-month-old baby girl with plagiocephaly condition since birth

A 5-month-old baby girl was born with a mild plagiocephaly and moderate brachycephaly condition.

Plagiocephaly is a condition in infants with a distressing name but is entirely harmless.
Positional plagiocephaly occurs due to a child being placed in a repetitive position, resulting in flattening of a part of the head or cranial asymmetry. It occurs in approximately 50% of infants.
Plagiocephaly at birth is relatively rare and affects about 1 in 2000 to 1 in 2500 births.

None of these conditions are dangerous, and if they do not improve naturally by the age of four months, the following measures are recommended in order:

1. Correct positioning
2. Therapeutic exercises (physiotherapy)
3. Helmet therapy

✓ How does helmet therapy work?

By applying gradual pressure to prominent areas or larger-than-normal dimensions and creating corrective space for depressed parts, it ensures effective correction.

✓ How is the helmet made?

The helmet is made by taking a mold of the skull or using a portable 3D scan.

✓ What material is the helmet made of?

It consists of a hard outer shell and a thick inner foam, manufactured using a 3D printer.

✓ How long is the duration of helmet therapy?

The duration varies depending on the severity of the infant’s deformity and the age at which the treatment begins, but on average, it lasts for about three months.

✓ What is the best age to start cranial orthosis treatment for skull deformity?

Between 4 to 6 months of age.

✓ Does the child experience pain or discomfort?

During the initial days, it may take a few days for the baby to get used to wearing the helmet, but it generally does not cause any specific pain or discomfort.
