The client was a 19-year-old suffering from below-the-knee amputation due to an accident.
This is his initial prosthesis consisting of an atps silicone liner, shuttle lock, titanium style mid-pieces, and American College Park tres carbon claw. He managed to take independent and successful strides after three days of training. Below-the-knee prostheses include three main components:
- The Socket: Connects the limb to the prosthesis
- The Pylon: Transfers the weight to the foot and, subsequently, the ground
- The Foot: Various types of prosthetic feet have been designed with different functions including the following four.
- SACH jointless feet
- Uniaxial and multiaxial articulated feet
- Carbon prosthetic feet
- Sports feet
Details of below-the-knee prosthesis including the type of socket, suspension, and feet depend on the following:
- Patient age
- Patient gender
- Cause of amputation
- Patient’s job
- Patient’s physical activity level before amputation
- Patients’ place of residence (rural or metropolitan)
