Patient history : A mother with incomplete leg and ankle fracture union
Leg and ankle fractures due to diabetes, low bone-formation rate, infection, crushing, etc.
Orthotic treatment:
Orthosis is used in cases of incomplete union so the involved limb carries less weight after the resting period.
Orthosis function:
A portion of the patient’s weight is transferred to the knee and around the leg above the fracture site through the thermoplastic socket illustrated in the figure, applying approximately 20-50% of the body weight on the injured part.
Orthosis results:
- Better blood circulation and faster bone union
- Faster recovery
- Complete bone union and healing
