Patient history:
The patient was a 14-year-old female.
Complication:
Erb’s paralysis of the right hand was treated with occupational therapy strengthening techniques and training.
Her symptoms included:
- Dropping of the wrist and inability to raise fingers
- Inward pronation of the hand and inability to supinate (moving the palm upward)
- Muscle weakness when fully raising the shoulder

Orthotic treatment:
We designed and built her a long cocked splint placing her hand in the correction position and a shoulder ring on the healthy side that connected to the hand splint with a buckle and adjustable straps. Upward hand rotation could be increased by stretching the strap. Results were satisfactory; a simple and light orthosis that was easily adjustable by the therapist, patient companion, or the patient herself.
