A girl suffering from myelomeningocele

The patient was a 13-year-old girl with myelomeningocele who had undergone two reconstructive surgeries at two months and four years. Unfortunately, she suffered peripheral leg nerve damage following the second operation, causing her to lose the ability to walk. The patient recovered after five years of rehabilitation therapy including physiotherapy and orthotic treatment, and can currently walk independently despite an ankle sprain and Genu Valgum.
The orthosis prescribed for this patient was an X-leg brace prescribed and made in cases of Genu Valgum.

Various Genu Valgum diagnoses include:

  • Normal if ankles are 1.5cm apart when knees are touching
  • Grade 1 Genu Valgum if ankles are 1.5-2.5cm apart when knees are touching
  • Grade 2 Genu Valgum if ankles are 2.5-5cm apart when knees are touching
  • Grade 3 Genu Valgum if ankles are 5-7.5cm apart when knees are touching
  • Grade 4 Genu Valgum if ankles are 7.5-10cm apart when knees are touching

Grade 1 and 2 Genu Valgum are treated with orthopedic shoes with special modifications, while special braces need to be used to treat grade 3 and 4 Genu Valgum.

  • Orthosis effectiveness is one centimeter of correction per month.

For instance, a three-year-old with knock-knees and an ankle distance of 8cm must be treated for about 8-12 months.

  • An x-Leg orthosis is prescribed by orthopedic surgeons and is made only with a doctor’s prescription and referral.
